3 July 2017
The results of 10th competitive selection of film projects by Ukrainian State Film Agency have been announced; all these projects were competing to be included in Production and Distribution program for national films in 2017/18. Two projects by Kinorob, Gareth Jones historical thriller directed by Agnieszka Holland and historical drama Anne de Kiev directed by Yves Angelo received state support. “We are thankful to the State Film Agency and members of expert jury for high marks attributed to our projects, and for their trust. I would like to congratulate all cinematographers whose films received state support. Good luck everyone, as high-quality films should be numerous,” says producer Egor Olesov.
Anne de Kiev, a historical drama jointly produced by Ukraine (Kinorob) and France (DADAFILMS) was presented in the 10th competitive selection of Ukrainian State Film Agency in Feature Films for General Audience category. The film is based on a biography of a daughter of Kyiv prince Yaroslav the Wise, Anna Yaroslavna, who then became the great queen of France. The biopic will be directed by a three-time Cesar winner Yves Angelo, and Sergiy Mykhalchuk has been selected as DOP. “I became interested in the project because it allows to look for special cinematographic form for creating a resonance between two civilizational dimensions of France and Ukraine. The audience will face challenges provoked by a tale of a unique life, which has universal meaning,” says film director Yves Angelo. “When working on the film, I’ll first of all rely on my deep knowledge of the 11th century period and its key characters, which will permit to quickly work out images of both the leads and the age in general. This is a key pre-requisite for telling a marvelous story to the world.”
Presently Kinorob continues its active work on the project started in 2016. Now the film is in the stage of director’s script version development. The filming will start in summer 2018 and take place in France and Ukraine.

Gareth Jones,a historical thriller based on real events, was presented in the competition in Theme Feature Films category (dedicated to the 85thanniversary of Ukrainian Famine in 1932-1933). This is a story of a famous British investigative journalist Gareth Jones who in spite of deadly danger went to Ukraine to reveal and bring to global community the whole truth about the tragedy of Ukrainian people. His research of the famine, relentless censorship and international conspiracy inspired George Orwell to write his allegoric novel Animal Farm.
Gareth Jonesjointly produced by Ukraine (Kinorob), Poland (Film Produkcja), UK (Boy Jones Films) will be directed by a well-known Polish director Agnieszka Holland (Academy Awards and BAFTA nominee, Silver Bear winner at Berlin International Film Festival 2017). “Gareth Jones made it through all circles of totalitarian hell, fought cruel reality, faced lies and betrayal. Because nobody really wanted to hear the truth Gareth tried to reveal. This wasn’t in the interest of either British politicians or the powerful,” says film directorAgnieszka Holland.“The Truth about Soviet reality, as well as about Holocaust, was not recognized by democratic, politically and morally corrupt West; those who talked about it were forced to keep silent. The conclusions that can be drawn from this simple story are especially important today.”
The filming will take place in Ukraine, Poland and Scotland. The premiere of Gareth Jones historical thriller is planned for autumn 2018.
In 1933, Welsh reporter Gareth Jones is looking for his next big story. News of Moscow being a hot spot leads him to the metropolis, where he meets an American journalist Ada Brooks. She reveals him that the truth about the “Soviet utopia” is being violently repressed. And Gareth starts to put the pieces together. Hiding from the KGB, despite deadly threats, bit by bit he uncovers the truth about the tragedy of the Ukrainian people: the Holodomor, hard censorship, conspiracies and mass repression. Later the Gareth’s work finds a home as the basis of scathing allegory Animal Farm by the famous writer George Orwell.
